Thoughts on Fierce and Grapple, my two fightpad controllers

Fierce SNES

Not to give the game too much credit, but Street Fighter II Turbo is the reason I fell in love with fighting games, began watching anime and Japanese pro wrestling, and ever thought to care about graphic design. It’s a cornerstone of my career and all of my hobbies. I’ll probably play this game until my hands won’t let me.

If you like SNES fighting or action games, please give my new controller a try. Fierce SNES features a 6-button layout and a big control pad to make Spinning Piledriver’s and Shoryuken’s easier on a phone. This is the SNES controller I always wanted.

It took a good amount of revisions to get the layout correct. Here’s a few WIPs:

Eventually, I landed on the 6-button array on the right and a large dpad on the left (each direction is also a separate button, hopefully aiding in accuracy), with the menu buttons on the bottom.

I was inspired by the loud graphics of arcade cabinets to create multiple faceplates. Fierce Super has Street Fighter controls and fire embedded in its background, and Fierce Brutal has Morkal Kombat kontrols and heaps of blood. I hope they help you stay immersed in these classics. I hope it’s clear I had a lot of fun making this controller.

This controller began as the SNES version of my last set, Action. I felt the dynamic lighting of that series didn’t fit the SNES, because the player needs standardized colours for the buttons because there are even more here.

Unlike my Idle controllers, Fierce SNES works as a general controller for all SNES games. The buttons are oversized for more comfortable platforming.

Grapple 64

Grapple 64 is a custom controller for Delta to make playing wrestling games on the N64 more comfortable.

These games are fun, but the control scheme is odd and can be difficult to remember. Read more about WCW/nWo Revenge in my review here. In making this controller, I took an arcade approach to customize the control scheme to suit the game.

So, the D-pad is more prominent, the analogue stick is smaller, the C buttons are re-arranged specifically for this game, and I’ve moved the  L button so it can be reached by the right thumb. Most importantly, each button has a label telling the player what it does, just like you’d find at an arcade cabinet.
