My favourite movies released in 2023
- Blackberry ⭐⭐⭐⭐ I’ve never been to Waterloo but everyone I know has and they’ve never invited me.
- Barbie ⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Godzilla Minus One ⭐⭐⭐⭐ I loved that it was colour graded to look like the 50s, and that Godzilla’s face is still adorable.
- Oppenheimer ⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Asteroid City ⭐⭐⭐⭐ My review was cut for time.
- Kaguya-sama: Love Is War -The First Kiss That Never Ends ⭐⭐⭐⭐ What if you loved someone so much you couldn’t do anything right.
- Suzume ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Your name is chair now.
- The Banshees of Inisherin ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Me, not really getting it: I wish I had a friend like that.
Ten older movies I watched and loved in 2023
- The Talk of the Town, 1942⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Take 1937’s The Awful Truth mix it with 1936’s Fury. It’s a crazy combination, and it absolutely works.
- Repeat Performance, 1947 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ This is a fascinating time loop movie because our main gal kills her husband, wishes to go back in time to fix the past, and gets to live the year again—but all it does is show the audience why she was right to shoot him in the first place.
- Clue, 1985 ⭐⭐⭐⭐
- The Love God?, 1969 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Modern mothers for obscenity approved.
- How to Save a Marriage and Ruin Your Life, 1968 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ The flick had plenty of chances to shoot itself like so many “war of the sexes 60s comedies,” but it kept surprising with its modernity, pro-union talk, and quality zingers.
- Desk Set, 1957 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Nothing like a “will AI replace us” story from the 1950s to remind you that history rhymes.
- Amateur, 1994 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ The dialogue alone makes this wild, but the plot is top tier 90s trash noir too.
- Baby Face, 1933 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Precode rom coms remain undefeated.
- Drive My Car 2021 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Best watched cut up into parts to watch as little rewards for domestic chores on a rainy Sunday.
- Police Story 3: Super Cop, 1992 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Did you know movies used to be able to dislocate your jaw just by watching it?
