JUMP Math New Canadian Grade 1 Assessment & Practice Student Books

Team role: Layout Designer / Graphic Design / Asset Design
Deliverables: Print-ready student workbooks and teacher resources (Grades 1–6)
Tools: Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Word, DTP Tools scripts

The goal was to build a series of Grade 1 to 6 math student books by merging legacy content with newly developed lessons, all while migrating the files into a contemporary design system. I collaborated with a talented team of writers, editors, and designers on this project.

Rather than attacking the layout page by page, we developed a workflow to manage the volume and complexity of the curriculum. This included a sort of content triage: I separated the workflow into “Old Content” and “New Content” streams. For older files, I stripped out outdated content and formatting, isolated legacy styles, and prepped the content for the new template.

I helped create hundreds of decorative and technical, math-based graphic assets.

I took advantage of DTP Tools scripts and my own custom GREP queries (specifically targeting mathematical operator fonts and formatting) to define the aesthetic structure before manual layout began. We built a robust library of nested Paragraph, Character, and Object styles. This aided with consistency across thousands of pages, from superscripting ordinals to standardizing tricky sub-sub-questions and mathematical operators.

The final stage involved a multi-pass QA process to catch inconsistencies, errors, and help guarantee perfectly clean, print-ready files to be enjoyed by students and teachers.
