Flood 13 may be the heaviest magazine I’ve ever held. It’s over a kilogram and a half. This is exercise equipment.
Music magazines are recommendation engines. The layout artists at Flood understand spatial respect. Here, they give their albums of the years half a page each, lots of breathing room for art and background elements, but not indenting the paragraph fill one pixel.
A big magazine like this is an awesome space to showcase artist material. The Cey Adams art layout uses a vertical tryptic that frames the kind of page you rip out and frame.
Of course, the main event of this issue is the huge Gorillaz feature. The page size allows these columns to feel so comfortable to read. The gradient fill behind the pull-quote feels like it’s in motion. The whole thing is so playful.
And then the magazine does a pretty great magic trick. It flips itself upside down. Come back tomorrow for part two.
