Layouts I Love 65 • The Hong Kong Correspondent

Here’s a term you might not have heard in a while: above the fold. In the newspaper industry, it refers to the top half of the front page, where the most attention grabbing headline resides, to catch the eye of someone walking past the newsstand.

The Hong Kong Correspondent, a supplemental in the form of a newspaper, make sure that its layout is good above the fold that’s also above another fold.

Once a year or so, Monocle drops a newspaper on us as a subscription bonus. As I flipped through it, I wondered: when was the last time I saw original artwork in a newspaper? When was the last time I saw a full-page fashion section in a newspaper? When was the last time I noticed a newspaper worth sharing?

These aren’t necessarily criticisms of the industry. Maybe I just haven’t been paying attention. And maybe I should. Perhaps that’s the point of an exercise like this.
