I picked this one up at the Beguiling in their amazing zine section.
Gainazine by Sean O’Mara conveys the raw energy of early Gainax, the messy decades of Daicon Films, General Products, and Royal Space Force. The layout leans into nostalgia while keeping things visually clean. It uses a mix of rare promotional materials and catalog scans that make the zine feel like a curated physical archive.
Instead of relying on standard, clean promotional anime stills, the zine thrives on visual collage.
The dithered, low-fi screen tone patterns on the vintage garage-kit instruction manuals and General Products catalog pages add an incredible tactile layer.
Great layout design can elevate historical archiving and keep things fresh. Gainazine is an excellent example of this.
