I am incredibly grateful to Greg Smith for sending over a collection of his beautifully crafted typographic chapbooks from Blind Pig Press. I purchased two of them at Paperjam back in March and this led to a great discussion with him.
These are physically impressive chapbooks with great feel. In this medium, you can really see the effort. Hand-bound, tactile typesetting, and illuminating criticism make them all really delightful.
I asked Greg what draws him to this specific format, and he shared that it informs his writing from the start: he envisions the chapbook beforehand, choosing a size that fits comfortably in the hand and sits slightly taller to give them a sense of elegance.
When asked where his deep dedication to the craft comes from, Greg trace it back to his childhood, redrawing letterforms from a Letraset catalogue. For him, listening to what different types say and producing these small books perfectly ties together his technical, aesthetic, and philosophical interests.
