Layouts I Love 89 • The Pudding’s Menu Story

The pudding is a website with a ton of fun graphic design posts. They use colour, hierarchy, and maps to make fascinating posts about modern culture. It’s been one of my favourite blogs for a long time.

Back in the summer, they posted “Menu Story,” an essay about the New York Public Library’s Buttolph Collection of Menus from 1880-1920. It’s a very cool collection of menus collected by Miss Frank E. Buttolph . The Pudding’s post argues that menus reflect class and environmental shifts in history. Their layout suggests they’re running circles around most web developers.

Notice how for this image, the layout changes based on the height of the browser.

Notice how the menus zoom from the background.

It also has a “full menu” button to let the reader enjoy some amazing menu layouts, like this one from 1897.

Just great stuff.
