Nothing says “December 1999” like this Alex Ross cover for Wizard #100. This “Year-End Spectacular” featured a massive gatefold mural with Ross’s style, capturing a tension in the comic world as it stood on the brink.
Remember the Superhero Showdown? In this 64-hero bracket, fans voted for their favourite superheroes and they printed the results on a full spread. This is the kind of content free-with-popup websites would really just take over from printed material in the coming years.
This ADV Films ad is a reminder of what sold at the time. I love the overprint text bubbles and three-frame spreads. Oh, that coupon in the corner? That might not still be good.
I was surprised to see so much anime coverage in Wizard. It’s also a good reminder that physical media always cost something.
