This was a nice Anime North find.
The first thing I notice about this issue of NewType is that the cover story is the first thing in. Table of contents, main story. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen that before. Also, the main story has almost 30 pages of interviews and art. That’s so in depth.
Further in, the magazine transitions from talking about anime and manga to providing a chapter of manga. They even change the paper stock for this section to match.
As a Ranma 1/2 fan, I loved the layouts of the director interview. Its a breakdown of expression, and the desire to get the feeling of the manga right for this remake.
Just to return to the Anime North spirit, I was delighted to see a spread of fan art submitted to the magazine. I used to love pages like that the most, and it’s great some publications are still at it.
