Eye-catching print spreads are designed to be eye catching for when you’re flipping through the magazine at a kiosk. Monocle is no different. Their art style reads well at a glance and far away, but they offer enough actual information to make coming closer worth it for your eyeballs and brain.
Like this cute grid graphic for rail travel. Each of the six plans show the beginning and ending, how long it takes, and the name of the rail line. What could just be a list becomes a cute graphic that feels like it belongs with the conversation. This comes from the issue’s Quality of Life survey, where most cities listed get a glowing column.
But it wouldn’t be Monocle without beautiful two-page photo spreads. On page 84, there’s a vista of Tokyo that communicates exactly why you might want to go. Don’t your feet hurt from walking all day?
My favourite part of this issue is “Answers on a Postcard,” a photo collection of old postcards. These cards are beautiful, and the writings from tourists remain equal parts charming and concerning.
